New Delhi, May 23: A confident Karnataka Chief Minister, BS Yeddyurappa, is set to meet the President on Monday after the Centre rejected Karnataka Governor, HR Bharadwaj’s report recommending President’s Rule in the state.
The Karnataka CM arrived in the Capital last night with some of his ministers.
"It is the victory of the people of Karnataka. I take this opportunity to thank the honorable Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister to take an appropriate decision," Yeddyurappa said.
But the Karnataka Chief Minister reiterated that he will demand the recall of Governor HR Bhardwaj.
"I am immediately going to request the government to recall the Governor," he said.
The Centre had, on Sunday night, rejected Mr Bhardwaj’s recommendation for imposition of President’s Rule in the state, exactly a week after he escalated tensions with the ruling BJP there.
The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, shortly after the conclusion of the second anniversary celebrations of the UPA-II Government last night.
"The CCPA today met to discuss the Karnataka Governor’s report and after careful consideration decided not to accept his recommendations," Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the meeting.
Even as it rejected his report, the CCPA has asked the Home Ministry to write to the Karnataka Government bringing to its notice the issues mentioned by the Governor.
An advisory will be issued, Chidambaram said, and hoped that the state government will take note of it.
This may be one of the rare instances when the Centre has rejected the recommendations of a Governor for imposition of President’s Rule.
The BJP earlier in the day pressed the UPA government to reject by tomorrow evening Bhardwaj’s recommendation failing which the party warned it would go on a nation-wide agitation.
Centre rejects Governor Bhardwaj’s report on Karnataka
New Delhi, May 22: The Central government on Sunday rejected Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj’s report suggestion imposition of presidents rule in the state. Earlier on Sunday, Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa had appealed to prime minister Manmohan Singh to reject governor HR Bhardwaj’s recommendation on imposition of President’s Rule in the state before embarking on a foreign trip on Monday.
"I told the prime minister: take a decision before leaving abroad if you are to retain the respect that I have for you," he said in the coastal city of Mangalore.
Manmohan Singh will leave on Monday, for a six-day visit to Ethiopia and Tanzania. Yeddyurappa said when BJP and NDA leaders met Singh last week, the delegation was told nothing unconstitutional would be done vis-a-vis the governor’s special report, adding, he has full faith in the prime minister and home minister P Chidambaram that it would not be accepted.
But he warned, "I will perhaps wait only today and tomorrow. After that, our ministers and MPs may have to change the format of agitational programme. That may become inevitable for us."
Earlier in Bangalore, Yeddyurappa also said the opposition Congress and JDS want to dislodge the government as it is popular and has people’s support and they feared that if it continued in office, they would be "destroyed" and would "bite the dust".
