Appearing for the Muslim body, senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court that unnecessary religious tension was being created in the area. He mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before Chief Justice of India UU Lalit.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the plea on Tuesday, August 30.

On August 26, the Karnataka High Court granted permission to hold Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Idgah Maidan in Bengaluru’s Chamarajpet. The court’s nod came after the BJP-led state government filed an appeal against the August 25 interim order to maintain status quo.

In its order, the high court said that the government can take a call to permit the festival on the ground which has been caught up in a row.

The Idgah Maidan is at the centre of a dispute after some organisations demanded to hold Ganesh Chaturthi celebration at the venue as it is government property. The Karnataka Waqf Board claimed the property as its own and challenged the government over the issue of ownership.
