Karnataka Private Schools Association opposes govt’s decision to scrap NEP

Bengaluru, August 27, 2023: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s announcement to scrap the National Education Policy (NEP) from the next academic year has not gone down well with some sections in the education sector. The move is now being opposed by the Karnataka State Private Schools Association. The members of the association demanded to make changes to policy instead of removing it.

The Private Schools Association termed it as ‘not a healthy development’ and demanded the government to continue the NEP as it has already been implemented and make changes wherever necessary to the policy.

Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah held a meeting with Vice-Chancellors and experts on August 21 and announced that a committee would be formed soon to prepare the Karnataka Education Policy which would be implemented in the next academic year.

Clarifying on the students who have been admitted under the NEP rule, Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar said that students would get a three-year degree certificate and will not be promoted to the fourth year as the state has decided to scrap the NEP.

Several state BJP leaders including former CM Basavaraj Bommai, CT Ravi and Ashwath Narayan among others had objected to the government’s decision to scrap NEP.

Reacting to the opposition’s comments, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar questioned why the BJP-ruled states have not implemented it.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan posted eight questions to Shivakumar related to children’s education and asked Congress’ stand on it.

Congress in its election manifesto had announced to scrap the NEP terming it as ‘Nagpur Education Police’ referring it to the RSS headquarters.
