Kalaburgi, June 16, 2023: A police constable, who was on duty, was allegedly crushed to death by the sand mafia near Narayanpura village of Jevargi taluk in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district.
The incident occurred on Thursday when constable, Mayura, 51, from Nelogi police station was trying to stop a truck which was transporting illegally mined sand. The driver ran over the constable.
Police registered a case against the accused, Siddanna, and have arrested him. During interrogation, Siddanna confessed to the crime, that the constable stopped the illegal transportation of sand and that he ran over him.
"There is a stock of sand there that belongs to a private individual. Some of the sand belongs to PWD as well. The constable was on patrolling to control people who mine sand illegally. In this process, constable Siddanna was crushed to death," said Kalaburagi SP Isha Pant.
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge took note of the issue and has ordered police to take strict action against illegal sand mining. "I have once again given strict orders to the police department to immediately take legal action against illegal sand mining. An investigation has been ordered into the incident," Kharge said as quoted by news agency ANI.
