Bengaluru, April 11, 2023: The Janata Dal (Secular) released its first list of candidates comprising 93 names for the upcoming May 10 Karnataka elections on 19 December. The list had nominees from almost all the districts of Karnataka right from Khanapur in Belagavi in north Karnataka to Hanur in Chamarajanagar district of the southern part of the state. Voting for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly will take place on May 10, and results will be declared on May 13.
The list was released by the party’s state chief CM Ibrahim on December 19, 2022, in the presence of former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who will contest from the Channapattana seat. Kumaraswamy’s son and grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, will contest from Rama Nagar, while GT Deve Gowda will contest from the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency.

The JDS was first off the block among the three leading contenders, including the ruling BJP and the principal Opposition Congress, with the release of 93 names, including for 26 of the 37 seats that the party won in the 2018 polls.
Kumaraswamy has maintained that the JD(S) aim is to win 123 of the 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly. In the 2018 elections, a hung verdict had put the party in a kingmaker’s position. While the JD(S) had won 38 seats, Congress 78 seats and BJP 104 seats.
