Kerala Police detains 4 Karnataka cops who came to Kochi to arrest suspects

Kochi, Aug 03, 2023: Four Karnataka cops, including an inspector, were detained by their counterparts in Kerala for alleged extortion. According to a Kerala Police officer, the four had travelled to the state to catch two suspects in a cheating case registered in Karnataka. They managed to locate and detain the two suspects and then allegedly demanded money to free them.

The incident took place in Kerala’s Kochi district.

The fiancee of one of the two suspects had filed a complaint with the local police, who then detained the four Karnataka cops.

According to the Kerala Police, the Karnataka Police team travelled to Kochi on August 1 to detain two men, Akhil and Nikhil, in connection with an online cryptocurrency cheating case that took place in Karnataka. The accused were arrested by the four Karnataka Police officials, who then allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh from each of them to set them free.

One of the accused reportedly paid Rs 1 lakh, while the other paid Rs 2.95 lakh. One of them reported the matter to the Kerala Police with the help of his fiancee. The Kerala cops detained the Karnataka Police officials, and recovered Rs 3.95 lakh from their vehicle.

Further investigation in the case is underway and a senior officer from the Karnataka Police has reached Kochi to look into the matter.
