New Delhi, Dec 29, 2021: Metro commuters in Delhi on Wednesday morning were in for a harrowing time with the queues outside stretching nearly 2 kilometres. The queues increased as the Metro is operating with 50% capacity amid rising cases of Omicron. Queues for buses, too, were very long as they operated at 50% capacity.
When an India Today team visited the area outside the station, it found that social distancing and the mask rule were being flouted by many.
Tired of standing in the queue, a commuter said, “I have been standing in the queue for over an hour. Now, I am late for the office. It would have been better to shut down the Metro service altogether.”
A few commuters said that they had no choice but to go to office as working from home earned them only half the salary.
Jyoti, an employee at an educational institute in Hauz Khas, said, “It takes around an hour to reach my office from my home. But today, I have been standing for over 30 minutes in the queue. I don’t know when I shall be able to reach the office.”
A Noida Sector 52 employee, Mukesh, said: “Shutting down the metro would have been better. People wouldn’t have wasted time standing in queues.” An engineer with a Noida Sector 62 company, Ashutosh, said that it was an ordeal to stand in the long queue, but it’s better than working from home at half the salary.
"Buses are plying. But due to reduced seating capacity, the wait time for passengers has increased, causing crowding at the bus stop," a commuter said.
