New Delhi, Mar 24, 2022: MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain of Chennai Super Kings two days ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022. Dhoni has picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the 4-time IPL champions.
CSK have confirmed that MS Dhoni will continue to represent the team this "season and beyond."
Chennai Super Kings, the defending IPL champions, will play the season opener against 2021 runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 in Mumbai. When CSK were suspended for two years after the spot-fixing scandal erupted, Dhoni had represented Rising Puner Supergiant in 2016 and 2017. Back together with CSK in 2018, Dhoni had one of his best years with the bat in the IPL and scored 455 runs at a strike rate of 150.66 to help CSK win the title.

MS Dhoni is the most celebrated Indian captain. He led India to glory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In the IPL, Dhoni has been synonymous with the Super Kings, leading them to 4 title triumphs. After a poor season in 2020, MS Dhoni endured criticism before storming back to win the IPL in 2021.
Ravindra Jadeja has been part of the Chennai Super Kings since 2012 and is an integral member. The star all-rounder is in red-hot form and created history in the Mohali Test against Sri Lanka where he scored 175 and took 9 wickets.MS Dhoni’s shock announcement before the IPL 2022 is sure to1 disappoint the fans.
In 2014, MS Dhoni had suddenly announced his decision to retire from Test cricket in the middle of a series in Australia. In January 2017, Dhoni decided to step down as India’s shorter formats captain before finally hanging his boots in August 2020.
Over the years, MS Dhoni, once one of the finest power-hitters and finishers in the game, has failed to live up to his own lofty standards with the bat. After scoring 416 runs at an average of 83.20 from 15 matches in IPL 2019, he managed only 200 runs in 2020 and an abysmal 114 runs in 2021.
However, Chennai Super Kings have stuck with MS Dhoni despite the dip in batting form. He continues to be a sharp wicketkeeper and his leadership is still high quality. Before the IPL auctions in 2022, Dhoni was the second CSK player to be retained after Ravindra Jadeja.
MS Dhoni will undoubtedly form an integral part of the CSK think-tank and it will be interesting to see how Ravindra Jadeja copes as captain.
In the T20 World Cup last year, MS Dhoni was named mentor but India still failed to make it past the group stages.
