Mahi rescue: Army gives up, Delhi Metro team called in to save girl stuck in borewell

New Delhi, June 23, 2012: Strengthening efforts underway to rescue the four-year-old girl who fell in a borewell in Manesar, Haryana, three days ago, the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government on Saturday brought in a highly specialised team of experts from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to aid in the rescue operations, after the Army rescue team consisting of engineers admitted failure in cutting through a rock blocking the rescue tunnel.

The Army rescue team hit upon the rock around midnight on Friday. Since then, the rescue operations have progressed slowly, hindered further by high temperatures and dust storm.

Mahi fell into the 70-feet deep borewell on Wednesday.

Three days later, on Saturday, the rescue operations are said to have reached their last leg. The Army rescue team was able to reach three meters away from the child.

Meanwhile, oxygen is being consistently supplied to Mahi. However, her condition remains a cause for concern.

Mahi, reportedly, has not shown any sign of life for the past 24 hours, and rescue workers say food and water cannot be supplied to her as there isn’t enough space in the shaft. A medical team, meanwhile, is on the stand by for any emergency.

The Haryana Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said, "The government is doing all that is possible. Vertical wells have been dug. About two feet is left horizontally. We pray that the child is safely taken out. I won’t comment on behalf of the government."

A team of Gurgaon Rapid Metro was pressed into service after the rescue operations were halted after the rock was discovered in the tunnel. The team was called in to assist the Army to save the child even as Sonia, the distraught mother of Mahi, made repeated appeals to the administration and the public to help save her daughter.
