According to police, five students--aged between 19 and 21--were returning from a marriage function in an inebriated condition and were roaming around in the national capital in a Tata Zest car. Around 3am on Friday, two PCR vans of Keshavapuram police station, which were on patrolling duty, spotted the car ramming into a Honda Activa scooter at Prerna Chowk in Delhi’s Kanhaiya Nagar area.

Two men, identified as Kailash Bhatnagar and Sumit Khari, were riding the scooter. The impact of the collision was such that the bonnet of the car opened and Kailash, who was driving the scooter, jumped in the air and got stuck between the car’s windshield and the bonnet.

Sumit too got thrown off the vehicle and fell on the car’s roof before tumbling down the four-wheeler. The scooter got stuck in the bumper of the car.

Police said instead of stopping the car, the accused attempted to flee the spot and dragged Kailash. Head constable Surjeet Singh and constable Ram Kishore from Keshavpuram police station chased the car for around 350 metres and intercepted the vehicle.

Two men--Praveen alias Silli (20) and Divyansh--got down from the car and started fleeing the spot but were eventually arrested.

Meanwhile, assistant sub-inspector Ajab Singh and head constable Amit, who were posted in the other PCR van, were informed about the accident and they rushed both Kailash and Sumit to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital.

While Kailash was declared brought dead, Sumit is currently under treatment and his condition is said to be critical.

According to police, Praveen was driving the car when it collided with the scooter. Three others who were travelling in the car but had managed to flee after the accident--Om Bhardwaj, Harsh Mudgal and Devansh (all aged 19)--were arrested during the course of the investigation.

Police said some of the accused men had just completed Class 12 and were pursuing graduation. Their medical tests revealed that all of them were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

The Delhi Police have registered a case against all five accused under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder, 304A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, sections 50 and 177 of the Delhi Motor Vehicle Roads and 39 and 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west Delhi) Usha Rangrani said, "We have arrested five people. During the course of the investigation, we also came to know that the number plate of the car in which they were travelling was distorted. While there was no number plate on the front end of the car, the one at the rear end was covered. Further investigation is underway."
