Mekedatu march: DK Shivakumar among 30 Cong leaders booked for violating weekend curfew

Bengaluru, Jan 10, 2022: A complaint has been filed against 30 Congress leaders and workers, including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar for taking out a rally from Mekedatu, violating the weekend curfew on Sunday.

Ramnagara SP Girish said that the complaint by the tehsildar alleged that they had flouted Covid 19 protocols.

1. On Sunday, the Congress in Karnataka started its 10-day march from Mekedatu to Bengaluru demanding the implementation of the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river.

2. The march is being led by the Congress’s state president D K Shivakumar and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah.

3. The padayatra, with the theme — ’Namma Neeru Namma Hakku’ (Our water, our right) — began at the Sangama, the confluence of the Cauvery and the Arkavathi rivers in Kanakapura in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

4. The Karnataka government slammed the Congress for flouting Covid-safety norms amid rising cases. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai lashed out at Congress leader DK Shivakumar for holding the Mekedatu march amid rising Covid cases and called him ’irresponsible’ for refusing to get tested.
5. The CM also lashed out at DK Shivakumar for refusing to get tested for Covid.

6. CM Basavaraj Bommai said that the earlier Congress government failed to submit a proper Detailed Project Report (DPR) during its five-year tenure and is raising the issue now as the Assembly elections are approaching.

7. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said: "Action would be taken against anyone who violates Covid rules. There would be no differentiation in dealing with them."

8. The BJP said that it is committed to the Mekedatu project.

9. Tamil Nadu has been opposing the Medekatu project on the grounds that it will lead to a reduction in the quantum of water from Cauvery to the state awarded by the supreme court and that it was against its farmers.

10. Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar stirred up another controversy on Monday after he used a rape analogy to mock state Home Minister Araga Jnanendra over his comments on the Mekedatu march and violation of Covid protocol by Congress leaders.
