Merchant navy officer kills wife, her ‘lover’

Mumbai, Dec 10, 2015: A merchant navy officer allegedly murdered his wife and ‘lover’ before surrendering himself to the local police after he ‘failed’ to hang himself at Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, on Wednesday. The victims had been allegedly in a relationship for the last eight months.
The merchant sailor, identified as Druhkant Thakur (26), has confessed and told the police that he killed the victims around 5 am on Wednesday.
After the murders, he walked down the apartment building and asked the building security guard to call the cops.
The murders took place at Vedant Dhrushti society in Kamothe’s sector 19 area. The wife identified as Sushmita, 24, was a second-year medical student and her alleged partner, Ajay Singh, 27, worked overseas in a private firm.
According to investigators, Druhkant and Sushmita lived separately and had been planning to get divorced since June this year. Ajay and Sushmita, neighbours told the police, had decided to make their relationship official.
The police confirmed that the murders took place in the flat where Sushmita was living with Ajay on rent. On December 6, Druhkant returned from an official trip from Dubai and started staying in Sushmita’s rented apartment.
Sushmita and Ajay had been traveling since December 3. Police have now found that Druhkant gained access into the flat after the neighbours gave him the house keys. They had also informed him that Sushmita was moving out of the house by the end of the month. Officers said when Sushmita and Ajay returned to their apartment on Tuesday, a “showdown” took place. “There were a lot of arguments over the divorce. Everyone was speaking with their voices raised, according to the other residents, “ said an investigating officer. Police said evidence found in the house suggested that the three then went to rest and even had dinner together.
“Around 5 am, Druhkant picked up a large kitchen knife and slashed Ajay’s throat while he was asleep in one of the bedrooms,” said an officer.
The officer added that then the accused allegedly walked towards the living room where his wife was sleeping and smothered her with a pillow.
According to police, Thakur then contacted his sister in Airoli and confessed his crime before trying to hang himself.
“Thakur tried to hang himself, above the body of his wife, with a black tie. However, he failed as the tie snapped from the ceiling fan. He then took his phone and went downstairs where the watchman and the chairman of the building who was on his morning walk found him covered in blood,” a police officer said. The watchman, Kamal Singh, said that Thakur was in a state of shock. “He (Thakur) had a large smartphone phone in his hand, but he could not dial any number as his hands were trembling. The only thing he said was that he wanted me to contact the police,” said Singh who called the control room.
