Following the meeting, the President’s official Twitter handle, @RashtrapatiBhvn, uploaded a photo of the two together along with the tweet: “Shri Mohan Bhagwat, Sarsanghchalak, RSS paid a courtesy call to #PresidentMukherjee on the eve of Diwali today.”

The meeting came a day after the BJP-led NDA lost to the Grand Alliance in Bihar. Earlier in the day, Bhagwat held a meeting with BJP president Amit Shah.

Officials said the meeting lasted nearly 45 minutes, during which Bhagwat extended Diwali greetings to Mukherjee.

Bhagwat was accompanied by kshetriya sanghchalak, north, Bajrang Lal Gupta and Delhi prant sanghchalak Kulbhushan Ahuja.

“It was just a courtesy meeting, nothing else,” Gupta told The Indian Express. Bhagwat was said to have also conveyed his condolences to Mukherjee on the death of his wife.

One of Bhagwat’s associates said they had requested for a meeting with the President a few weeks ago.

The meeting came against the backdrop of repeated reminders by Mukherjee to preserve “tolerance” in the country. “Our country has thrived due to its power of assimilation and tolerance. Our pluralistic character has stood the test of time,” the President had said at an event earlier this month.
