New Delhi, Sept. 10, 2011: Corporate Affairs Minister and senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily has slammed LK Advani’s decision to launch a yatra against corruption.
The former Law Minister said the country is still paying the price for Advani’s first yatra
"Advani’s yatras in the past have created a communal atmosphere. Following the yatra, several people died. What can I say about another one now?" he said, adding that the UPA government is taking several measures to curb corruption.
Earlier this week on Thursday, Advani announced that he will begin a new yatra (tour) across the country against corruption.
"I have decided to take out a yatra against corruption. The name of the yatra, its timing, point of origin and other details will be worked out with the party. Its focus will be on good governance and clean politics," the 83-year-old leader said.
The Congress had earlier said it was amused that a party whose president was "caught taking money" was undertaking such an exercise.
"It is amusing that the BJP is taking out a yatra against corruption," Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Congress leader P K Bansal told reporters.
Bansal said BJP was the only political party where former BJP president Bangaru Laxman was caught on camera accepting cash in a "real sting operation" carried out by a media house.
The BJP’s principal ally, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) has already expressed misgivings about Advani’s yatra plans when it was announced earlier in the week.
