Mumbai building collapse: Death toll rises to seven, six injured

Mumbai, June 11: The death toll in the tragic building collapse in Mahim, Mumbai rose to seven on Tuesday. Six people have been injured in the incident and include a fireman. Many people are feared trapped in the debris and the rescue operations are on.

Altaf Mansion, the five-storey building on Cadell Road collapsed late on Monday night after it rained heavily in the city. Around 10 to 12 people are feared trapped and rescue operations are still underway.

More than 60 fire brigade officials and three Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) teams are at the spot and the National Disaster Response Force, too, has been called in to help rescue the trapped.

An NDRF official said, "There are no problems as of now. Everyone is doing their duty. Our entire NDRF team is at work. About 90 members are in action and we have been working through the night. Local authorities are also helping us."

An elderly woman is amongst the dead when a portion of the building caved in, apparently due to rain, in Mahim in central Mumbai on Monday, a municipal officer said. The injured have been shifted to Bhabha Hospital in suburban Bandra, KEM and at Sion Hospital.

Nearly three lakh people are living in 500 buildings made with substandard material in Mumbai, say reports. These houses part of Mumbai’s biggest rehabilitation scheme.

Many of these houses were built at paltry Rs 515 per square feet. Normal cost of construction for the same is Rs 1,200.
