Mumbai rains hit rail, road traffic, cause landslide

Mumbai, Sept 03: Updates 10.44 PM After battling 3-4 hour traffic snarls, Mumbai is slowly limping back to normalcy, most of the people are reaching home.

 

 

10.20 PM Rains have stopped in most of the places, if it stays so for half an hour more water will drain away, says BMC disaster management.

10.03 PM According to the Mumbai traffic police, the traffic is likely to ease out in an hour.

9.59 PM Water logging upto 2 feet in Bahar junction, Shyam Talao, Sakinaka, Khar Subway, Gandhi Market; 2.5 feet at Kalachky, Bengal chemical north bound, Mahim causeway.

9.40 PM Water logging upto 1.5 feet in Mumbai Film city, Subhash Nagar, Mulund, Mahananda dairy, JJ junction, Sion hospital.

9.22 PM Mahalakshmi temple area under 1 feet of water and Mahananda dairy under 1.5 feet of water.

9.15 PM Rain recorded till 9.00 PM in the city - 101.6 mm; Eastern suburbs - 175.4 mm; Western suburbs - 175.4 mm.

9.13 PM Four people sustained injuries as a hut collapsed due to landslide at Chunabhatti.

9.00 PM Eight local trains have been cancelled in the central line, mainly between Kurla and Thane.

7.00 PM: Rain recorded till 7.00 pm in the city - 93.4 mm; Eastern suburbs - 141.8 mm; Western suburbs - 127.8 mm.

 

 

 

 

With monsoon remaining active over the region, Maharashtra on Monday received heavy rains. It is expected that Mumbai will receive rain continuously for the next six hours.

Mumbai traffic Police has issued an alert, asking people to avoid unnecessary travel. A 70-year-old man dies after being electrocuted in eastern suburbs.

Parts of Marathwada region, including Beed, Osmanabad and Latur also received heavy rains. Tansa dam, which is among the major dams supplying water to Mumbai, started overflowing since Monday afternoon.

While trains on the harbour, central and western lines are running late, no trains have been cancelled.

Meanwhile the BMC has deployed 110 water pumps to drain water from roads that have been flooded.

Many low-lying areas in the city and suburbs were waterlogged, leading to traffic snarls. They include western suburbs of Malad, Kandivli, Jogeshwari, Andheri and Santacruz. Some schools in suburbs were closed early to enable students reach their homes safely.

Parts of coastal Konkan also experienced substantial rainfall. In Thane, heavy rains led to waterlogging in places like Vasai, Virar, Palghar, Dahanu and Kalyan.

But rains have come as a welcome relief to other parts of Maharashtra. In Marathwada which has been badly affected by the lack of rains has received rainfall.

In Marathwada region, maximum rainfall was recorded at Renapur tehsil in Beed district at 210 mm in the last ten hours. Latur, too, is having incessant rains since midnight. Pangaon, Narotewadi and Khalangiri were the worst-affected.

Good rainfall was recorded in all parts of Aurangabad district. Hingoli, Nanded, Osmanabad, Jalna and Parbhani districts also recorded satisfactory rainfall in the last 12 hours. In Rajasthan, which has received more than its usual share of rain this monsoon has been inundated.
