Muzaffarnagar: 30 dead, 15 missing, eerie calm in town, villages tense

Muzaffarnagar, Sept 9: An eerie calm prevails in Muzaffarnagar town with the Army strictly enforcing curfew and the death toll spiralling up to 30.

Fifteen persons are still missing, sources said, as people in neighbouring villages are living in a state of fear. Many people have left their homes towards safer places.

 

A youth was shot dead near a place of worship in Wajidpur in Baghpat on Sunday night. Four others were injured and tension spread in the village and neighbouring areas. Senior police offers rushed to the spot to defuse the situation.

In Muzaffarnagar town, residents complained of shortage of milk, vegetables and essential commodities, with curfew enforced since Saturday.

Curfew is in force in Civil Lines, Kotwali and Nai Mandi areas of Muzaffarnagar where the Army took out a mounted flag march on Sunday.

Apart from Army jawans, 10,000 PAC jawans, 1300 CRPF jawans and 1200 RPF jawans have been deployed.

Security has been beefed up in Sisauli, Shahpur, Phugna, Kalapar and Dhaurakalan, where the situation is said to be tense.

In Phaguna, three people belonging to a community had to take shelter inside the nearby police station, while in Kutba, four people were killed and a place of worship was set on fire.

The situation is calm in Meerut and Shamli where army has been deployed.
