Referring to the BJP, the Shiv Sena chief said using religion to grab power is not his version of Hindutva.

We don’t have the same thought process. I don’t want a Hindu Rashtra which is not peaceful. Using religion and grabbing power is not my Hindutva, Thackeray said.

Continuing his attack on BJP, a former ally of the Sena, Thackeray went on to say people killing one another and creating unrest in the country is also not his version of a Hindu Rashtra.

That’s not what I have been taught, he added.

The Maharashtra chief minister’s statement comes just a few days after he said the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will not be implemented in Maharashtra. However, he defended the Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) as it does not take away people’s citizenship rights.

In an interview with Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana, Uddhav Thackeray said the Citizenship Act is not about taking away citizenship, it is about giving citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring nations.

Uddhav Thackeray said, "Proving citizenship will be difficult for both Hindus and Muslims. I will not let that happen."

Saamana has been critical of many measures implemented by the Modi government including the scrapping of Article 370, proposed NRC and even some aspects of CAA, which had triggered protests across the country.
