His election as the NDA leader took place at a meeting of the JD (U) and BJP legislators convened at the CM’s official residence – 1, Aney Marg.

Nitish is likely to be sworn in as CM on Thursday evening. Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi is tipped to be Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, a post he held till June 2013 before Nitish snapped ties with the BJP.

While extending unconditional support to the JD (U), the BJP had expressed its desire to be part of the Government.

“The BJP’s letter of unconditional support to Nitish has been submitted by the Bihar BJP chief Nityanand Rai to the Governor,” said Modi, while on his way to attend the meeting at CM’s residence late on Wednesday night.

The BJP decided to hurriedly extend its support to Nitish to thwart any move by Lalu whose RJD is the single largest party in the Assembly. The BJP with its 53 MLAs and the JD (U)’s 71 legislators together can easily cross the half-way mark of 122 in the 243-member Assembly. Besides, other BJP allies - LJP (2), RLSP (2) and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM (1) are also likely to support and join the government.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi was admitted to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (IGIMS) when he complained of a nose infection on late Wednesday evening.
