Since Varun Singla was on leave, Palwal SP Lokendra Singh was given the additional charge of Nuh to monitor the situation during the rally.

The rioting in Haryana was sparked by a religious procession taken out by VHP and Bajrang Dal in Nuh. The incident started a series of communal flare-ups in Gurugram, Sohna and other areas.

As many as six people, including two home guards and a cleric, have died in the clashes that erupted in Nuh over an attempt to stop a VHP procession. The violence soon spread to Gurugram, Sohna, Manesar and other districts, with the mob going on a rampage and burning down various shops and establishments, leading to huge losses. Various police cars and private vehicles were also torched in the violence.

In the wake of the communal clashes, the state government suspended internet services and clamped prohibitory orders in several areas.

According to police, a total of 176 people have been arrested and 78 taken into preventive detention in connection with the communal clashes in Haryana.

As per an FIR filed by a police officer, a mob of around 800-900 men attacked the Hindu rally when it began from Shiv temple in Nalhar. The strong mob chanted ’pro-Pakistan slogans’ and tried to stop the procession with sticks, stones and illegal weapons with an ’intent to kill’, the FIR said.

THREE-MEMBER COMMITTEE FORMED

Meanwhile, the Haryana government has constituted a committee that will monitor social media platforms to prevent the circulation of provocative material, including videos, photographs, and hate speeches, to maintain law and order and communal harmony. Haryana’s Home Minister Anil Vij on Wednesday said social media has played a significant role in fuelling the violence in Nuh.

Meanwhile, police are likely to probe the alleged role of Monu Manesar, linked to the killing of two alleged cow smugglers in Bhiwani this February, who is at the centre of Haryana communal clashes. A day before the clashes, Monu Manesar released a video on social media, saying he would participate in the ’shobha yatra’ and asked people to join it in huge numbers. However, he was stopped by the police in Manesar and didn’t attend the religious procession.
