Over 10 shops gutted after major fire breaks out at Koppal market

Koppal, May 21, 2024: At least 10-12 shops were gutted after a huge fire broke out at a market in Koppal on Monday.

The fire, which began at a hardware shop at around 3 pm, quickly spread to other shops. Several fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire.

 

Koppal SP Yashodha Vantagodi, who reviewed the incident on the spot, said that the "situation is almost under control."

"Some say it started from the paint shop, but there’s no clarity. We have evacuated everyone. Around 10-12 shops have been gutted," she added.

No casualties have been reported so far. Plumes of smoke continued to billow out from the shops for hours despite attempts to douse them.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, though a short circuit is suspected. The extent of the damage is also yet to be calculated.
