PM Modi launched sharp attacks on the Congress and especially party chief Rahul Gandhi while speaking in Chamarajanagar at his first election rally in Karnataka.

Modi hit out at the Congress for ’playing politics’ over the government’s recent assertion that it had achieved 100 per cent electrification of all villages.

PM Modi also mocked Rahul over the Congress chief’s 15-minute Parliament debate dare, saying Gandhi should instead prove whether he can speak on the Siddaramaiah government’s achievements for 15 minutes ’without looking at a piece of paper’.

From PM Modi’s attacks on Rahul and Congress to his comments on law and order in Karantaka, here are the top takeaways from his first rally in Karnataka. He will later speak in Udupi and Belagavi.

POLITICS OVER ELECTRIFICATION: PM Modi hit out at the Congress for doing politics over the government’s claim of achieving 100 per cent electrification of all villages. Congress leaders and their president Rahul Gandhi often end up crossing lines in their enthusiasm, PM Modi alleged. ’It would’ve been good if they’d said something nice about this country’s hard-working men who’ve brought electricity to 18,000 villages of this country,’ Modi said.

WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN YOU WERE IN POWER?
Continuing in a similar vein, PM Modi questioned why the previous Manmohan Singh-led UPA government had not fulfilled its promises of 100 per cent rural electrification. "Manmohan had said in 2005 that we will electrify every village by 2009... Okay, you don’t take Manmohan seriously you tear up his decisions in press conferences" PM Modi said, and referring to a 2013 press conference where Gandhi had attacked the then Manmohan Singh government for bringing in an ordinance shielding convicted MPs. However, "at least take your respected mother seriously Madam Sonia had said in 2005 that forget every village, we will electrify every home till 2009. You [did not thing] till 2014 until I came [to power]. Why are you misleading the nation?" PM Modi questioned.

THE 15-MINUTE COUNTER CHALLENGE: PM Modi mocked Rahul for challenging him to a 15-minute Parliament debate saying that just the fact that Gandhi would speak for a 15-minute stretch was in itself a big deal. "Do one thing... during this election... whatever language suits you... Kannada, Hindi, your mother’s tongue [speak about] your Karnataka government’s achievements for 15 minutes without any paper in your hand," PM Modi said, issuing a counter-challenge of his own.

CORRUPTION AND LAW-ORDER:
Towards the end of his first campaign speech in Karnataka, PM Modi targeted chief minister Siddaramaiah on corruption and law and order. No individual is untainted in the Congress’s Karnataka government, PM Modi said before attacking the law and order situation in the state. "There is no law and order even Lokayukta isn’t safe in this state" PM Modi said, referring to the recent attack on Karnataka Lokayukta Vishwanath Shetty.
