PM Modi, three service chiefs pay tribute to CDS Bipin Rawat at Palam airbase in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 09, 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid respects to CDS General Bipin Rawat and other Armed Forces personnel at Palam Airport on Thursday. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and three Services chiefs were present on the occasion.

The mortal remains of CDS Bipin Rawat and other Armed Forces personnel, who lost their lives in the chopper crash in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor, reached Delhi at around 8 pm. Some of the family members of the personnel killed in the chopper crash were alsopresent.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat died when a Mi-17V5 helicopter crashed in Coonoor of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. The four-star general was on his way to Wellington from Sulur airbase. He was accompanied by his wife Madhulika Rawat, who too was killed in the tragic accident.

 


So far, positive identification of only three mortal remains-- CDS Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat, and Brig LS Lidder-- has been possible. Their mortal remains will be released to the next of kin for final religious rites as desired by respective families.

Meanwhile, the process for positive identification of remaining mortal remains continues. The bodies of those who lose their lives in Tamil Nadu chopper crash will be kept at the Mortuary of Army Base Hospital till positive identification formalities are completed.


Appropriate military funerals of all deceased are also being planned and coordinated in close consultation with close family members.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed Parliament over the Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper crash. He formally informed both the houses of Parliament -- Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha -- of the demise of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat in the crash.

Expressing grief over the sudden demise of CDS General Bipin Rawat and 12 others, Rajnath Singh paid homage to the deceased persons and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

He also announced that a tri-service enquiry has been ordered by the IAF into the crash.
