New Delhi, Aug 21, 2023: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which studied the cause of death in people after recovering from Covid-19 infection, found that those who were vaccinated before contracting the virus had 60 per cent protection against post-discharge mortality.
An expert team working at the National Clinical Registry for Covid evaluated factors related to post-discharge mortality during the first year after Covid, and found that vaccination prior to coronavirus infection, with at least a single dose, provided 60 per cent protection against post-discharge mortality, ICMR said.
ICMR, the apex biomedical research body under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has been tracking patients to evaluate factors related to one-year post-discharge mortality.
The researchers contacted 14,419 participants at least once within a year after discharge from the hospital, and they recorded 6.5 per cent all-cause mortality among them.
The ICMR study also found that death within one year after discharge was higher among males, those over 40, people with comorbidities, and those with moderate-severe Covid disease.
The researchers at the National Clinical Registry contacted Covid-19 patients periodically by telephone for one year after discharge. Data collected until February 2023 were included in this analysis.
However, the ICMR stated that the findings relate to patients who had been hospitalised during their initial Covid infection and cannot be generalised to all patients.
