Belgaum, Feb 15: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was responsible for the IT revolution in India. He said when the Congress spoke about the IT, the BJP used to laugh at it.

rahul-in-belga..."In 1980, Rajiv Gandhiji took up the IT and computer development, then the opposition BJP laughed at him and said computer will not remove poverty. But changes can be seen in Karnataka and Bangalore now," Rahul said. "Now BJP comes and says India can become the IT super power," he added, taking a dig at BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi’s Nasscom address.

Addressing a meeting of the Congress workers in Belgaum, Rahul Gandhi praised Karnataka for its phenomenal growth in many fields. He said, "Karnataka has always been a very progressive state. It has contributed immensely to the nation building. Karnataka is one of the top IT hubs in the World. It is home to several top industries besides IT."

He praised former Karnataka chief minister SM Krishna for the IT revolution in the state. He also remembered former Karnataka CM D Devaraj Urs, who fought for the backward classes and successfully implemented the land reforms in the 1970s.

Without naming former CM BS Yeddyurappa he said, "a former BJP CM went to jail. Dozens of his ministers also went to jail for corruption. Under the BJP rule, it was not a BJP government. It was a Bellary government in Karnataka. Reddys’ of Bellary were running the government from Bellary and they were making thousands of crore from illegal mining".

He said that only the Congress could do something for the poor. Rahul Gandhi is touring Karnataka on Saturday and Sunday.
