New Delhi, Feb 10, 2021: The Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday arrested one more person in connection to the Republic Day violence case. Iqbal Singh, one of the accused in the case, was arrested from Hoshiyarpur in Punjab on Tuesday night.
Delhi Police had been searching for Singh over his role in the Red Fort incident on January 26, 2021 and had announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for any information on his whereabouts.
Several videos of Iqbal Singh had surfaced from January 26, where he was seen urging crowds to enter the at Red Fort. He has been accused of instigating the crowd near the Lahori Gate to storm the Red Fort.
Singh, a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab, has been on the run ever since the agitation in Delhi on Republic Day when a peaceful farmers’ tractor rally against the Centre’s farm laws turned violent.
He is likely to be interrogated by the police to find out more details about the case.
Big breakthrough
The arrest comes as a crucial breakthrough in the Delhi Police’s investigation in the case, shortly after actor Deep Sidhu was arrested by SWR Range of the Special Cell.
Sidhu, too, is accused of instigating a group of farmers to storm the Red Fort on Republic Day and his name was mentioned in the FIR filed by Delhi Police.
After Sidhu’s arrest, police said the last few videos of him were uploaded by his friend from California to confuse authorities about his whereabouts. After he was accused of instigating the farmers on Republic Day, Sidhu had gone missing and released a number of videos on his social media account to defend himself.
R-Day violence
On January 26, thousands of protesting farmers had clashed with police after a peaceful farmers’ tractor rally turned violent. The rally was called by farmer unions to reiterate their stance on the Centre’s farm laws.
Many of the protestors were seen engaging in vandalism at various areas of the national capital, while some stormed the Red Fort.
Some of the protestors even hoisted a religious flag on its domes and a flagstaff at the ramparts, where the national flag is traditionally unfurled by the prime minister on Independence Day.
