TamilNadu, Sep 13, 2016: Mariyappan Thangavelu, who became only the third Indian ever to clinch a Gold medal in the Paralympics, has donated Rs 30 lakh from the prize money he won after his historic feat to the government school where he studied.
Thangavelu, who hails from Periyavadagampatti village in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, grabbed Gold in men’s T42 high jump on September 9 in the Rio Paralympics with an impressive leap of 1.89 metres. (Rio Paralympics: Mariyappan wins Gold, Varun Bhati bronze in high jump)
After Thangavelu’s feat, the Tamil Nadu government had announced a cash reward of Rs 2 crore for him. He will also receive Rs 75 lakh from the Sports Ministry, while bronze medallist Varun Singh Bhati’ will receive a sum of Rs 30 lakh. Earlier, the Indian Olympic Association had announced that Thangavelu will be the country’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony of the Rio Paralympics on September 18.
Thangavelu, who was merely five-years-old when his right leg was crushed by a speeding bus, joined Murlikant Petkar (1972, swimming) and Devendra Jhajharia (2004, javelin throw) in the Indian Paralympics gold club.
