Chennai, March 11: A day after the sand mafia allegedly opened fire on officials probing illegal mining in Madhya Pradesh, a young man, who tried to stop illegal sand quarrying in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelevelli district, was run over by a mini-truck allegedly carrying illegal sand.
23-year-old Satish Kumar, on hearing that a mini-truck was illegally loading sand from the Nambiyaaru river, got together with a few other villagers and tried to stop it, but was run over in the process. He died on route to the hospital.
The driver of the mini-truck and another person has been arrested in connection with the incident. A case of murder has been registered against them.
Yesterday, the sand mafia in Madhya Pradesh allegedly opened fire on a team of sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), sub-divisional officer (police), town inspector and other policemen when they had gone to stop illegal sand transportation in Chandipati village of Ajaygarh area. No one was hurt in the incident. The alleged sand mafia in yesterday’s incident, Kuber Singh, was arrested this morning.
Earlier this week, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Narendra Kumar, was killed when a man driving a tractor ran over him in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district. The 30-year-old IPS officer was apparently killed for trying to combat illegal mining in the state. His wife has demanded a CBI inquiry into the murder.
