New Delhi, Sep 06, 2014: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her Brazilian partner Bruno Soares on Friday defeated American Abigail Spears and Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez 6-1, 2-6 and 11-9 (tie-breaker) to win the US Open mixed doubles title.
The Indo-Brazilian pair convincingly won the first set after which Spears-Gonzalez bounced back and won the second set.
In the tie-breaker, Spears-Gonzalez saved five match points before one of Spears’ strokes landed wide.
Earlier, the Indo-Brazilian pairing, top-seeds in the US Open mixed doubles event, beat Taipei’s Yung-Jan Chan and Briton Ross Hutchins 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 in 1 hour and 33 minutes to make the title round late on Wednesday.
It was a great start for Sania and Soares who played their first tournament together.
