Delhi, May 03, 2018 : Police have arrested a senior scientist of the Japanese Leprosy Mission for Asia Institute (JALMAI), Agra for allegedly raping two minor girls of his colleagues.
The matter came to light earlier this week when a six-year-old girl told her parents about the scientist’s deeds. When the girl told her parents, they informed the police and scientist Vishnu Dutt Sharma was immediately arrested.
The girl’s parents are also employees of JALMAI and live on the campus.
One of the two girls who reported the alleged crime to her parents said Sharma used to call her inside his house in the evening by offering toffees. The girl alleged that he would then do "bad things" with her.
Speaking to India Today, the girl’s mother said that on Tuesday evening, when she was searching for her daughter in the campus, she saw her coming out from Sharma’s house. The mother said that her daughter told her that "uncle calls her inside the house every day and does bad things" with her.
She said the scientist had also given death threats to her daughter if she tells anyone about her.
The mother added that while her daughter was telling her about the ordeal, another female employee came there with her daughter. She also alleged a similar assault on her. Alarmed at this, the parents informed the police and registered a case.
Police officials at Tajganj police station have confirmed that a criminal case has been registered against the accused under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He has also been arrested, the officials said.
The accused scientist has been working at JALMAI for the past 40 years. He is a native of Bharatpur in Rajasthan and was to retire on September 17.
JALMAI is considered to be a leading research institute on leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases.
