Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney General, passes away due to Covid-19

New Delhi, April 30, 2021: A noted jurist, Soli Sorabjee, passed away at the age of 91 after being admitted to a private hospital in South Delhi for treatment of the Covid-19 infection.

Soli Sorabjee began his legal career in 1953 at the Bombay High Court. He was designated a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1971 and went on to become the Attorney General of India. Sorabjee served as the Attorney General from 1989-90 and then from 1998-2004.

In March 2002, Soli Sorabjee was honored with the Padma Vibhushan for his work to defend freedom of speech and human rights.

On the passing of Soli Sorabjee, CJI Justice NV Ramana said, "Shri Soli J Sorabjee served the office of Attorney General of India twice with great distinction. His humane and compassionate approach defined his legal work."

"His body of work, spread over nearly seven decades, in defending the fundamental rights and human rights is of international repute. He will be remembered as a legend who added strength to the pillars of democracy. I pay my deep respect to the departed soul. Condolences to the family, friends and fans," said the Chief Justice of India.

Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted, "Anguished to learn about the passing away of Shri Soli Sorabjee, a noted jurist and former Attorney General of India. Sorabjee was a doyen of the legal fraternity, who will always be remembered for his contribution in the field of constitutional law. My condolences to his family."
