New Delhi, June 11, 2024: A special 8-day session of Parliament is slated to commence on June 24. In the 8-day session, the election of the Lok Sabha speaker is likely to be held on June 26, sources told India Today.

On June 24 and 25, new Members of Parliament will be taking their oaths, according to the sources.

During the special session, one of the main tasks on the BJP’s agenda will be picking up the NDA’s choice for the new Lok Sabha Speaker.

The Lok Sabha Speaker’s post is back in the minds of the people as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties, both TDP and JD (U), are eyeing the chair.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP was only able to bag 240 seats, and fell short of the 272 mark. This has led to fears of mutiny within the saffron camp, which over the past few years has become one of the key players when it comes to splitting parties and toppling governments. In such a scenario, the anti-defection law comes to the forefront, and thus the Speaker of the House becomes an important post.
