Sri Lankan Navy firing on Indian fishermen: MEA protests after 2 seriously injured

New Delhi, January 28, 2025: The Modi govt on Tuesday launched a strong protest against the firing incident by the Sri Lankan Navy during the apprehension of fishermen for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

"Government of India has always emphasised the need to treat issues pertaining to fishermen in a humane and humanitarian manner, keeping in mind livelihood concerns. The use of force is not acceptable under any circumstances whatsoever." a statement from the MEA read.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that 13 fishermen from India were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday night and among them, two suffered serious injuries in the navy’s gunfire.

Puducherry Fisheries Minister K Lakshminarayanan earlier claimed that the government is in touch with the External Affairs Minister to get the fishermen and boat released. These fishermen had set out for fishing a couple of days ago.
