Tokyo Paralympics: Sumit Antil breaks world record to clinch gold medal in men’s javelin F64 final

Tokyo, Aug 30, 2021: Sumit Antil scripted history on Monday as he broke the world record thrice to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, launching his way to the top of the podium in the men’s javelin F64 finals in Tokyo. India had won four medals in the 2016 editions while the medal count stands at seven in the ongoing event.
Earlier in the day, Devendra Jhajharia clinched a stupendous third Paralympic medal, a silver this time, while discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya also finished second.
Sundar Singh Gurjar also chipped in with a bronze, finishing behind Jhajharia in the men’s javelin throw F46 final. India’s medal count has now risen to seven, including one gold (shooting), three more than the four secured in the 2016 Rio Games.

It all began when Avani Lekhara won a historic gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final. The 19-year-old became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic or an Olympic gold medal in the country’s history.
