The Indian Army, in a statement, said the mob laid road blocks to prevent the movement of troops. However, the Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force soon controlled the situation.

“An attempt to loot weapons from an India Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal district of Manipur was successfully thwarted by security forces today. One rioter was killed while a few others were injured during the failed attempt,” the Army said.

“The mob had laid road blocks to prevent the movement of reinforcements. However, additional columns of the Assam Rifles and Rapid Action Force were able to induct and the situation was brought under control by the synergised efforts of security forces,” it added.

The situation in several parts of Manipur was tense, with sporadic incidents of violence, the state police said in a statement on Monday. Around 118 check-points have been set up and 326 people detained across the state as violence continues unabated.

Manipur has been witnessing widespread clashes since May 3, when a Kuki solidarity march by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) to protest the Meitei community’s demand for a Scheduled Tribe state took a violent turn.
