New Delhi, July 05, 2022: Twitter has approached the Karnataka High Court (HC) challenging the centre’s order to take down content from its platform under the new Information Technology (IT) rules. The centre had recently granted one last opportunity to Twitter to comply with the take down notices under Section 69A of the IT Act.

In a notice sent by the centre last week, Twitter was warned that it had failed to comply with two take down orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on June 6 and June 9, respectively. The centre further said that if Twitter continues to be in violation, then they may lose their protection as an intermediary under the new IT Rules.

Earlier, the Ministry of Electronics and IT had asked Twitter to comply with the rules and had set a deadline of July 4. If Twitter had failed to comply with the final notice, it could have lost the intermediary status, a PTI report said.

An official source told news agency PTI that the social media platform Twitter has complied with the final notice issued by the government on June 27.

The government and Twitter have locked horns on several occasions. The social media platform had submitted a list of over 80 Twitter accounts it had blocked on June 26 based on a request from the government in 2021.

The government had requested the Twitter to block multiple accounts and some tweets from international advocacy group Freedom House, journalists, politicians and supporters of the farmers’ protest.
