Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 3, 2013: Two men who worked with a pest control company have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping an IT professional at a fancy resort in Kerala five days ago.
The 44-year-old woman, who is from Bangalore, had travelled with colleagues for an official visit to the resort in Poovar, on the outskirts of the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram.
The police says that the two suspects worked for a contractor that supplied pest control services to the resort. On Thursday night, they entered the woman’s hotel room and pried the latch loose. They returned at 2.30 am and attacked the woman, who fought back and managed to grab a beaded necklace worn by one of the men.
That helped the police to identify the suspects from photographs of employees that were supplied by the resort’s management.
The police claims that the men who have been arrested have nail marks as the woman scratched them, hoping to break free.
The Kerala Women’s Commission team has been following the case and says that it’s concerned about impoverished security arrangements at the cluster of resorts that are being quickly assembled at the state’s beaches.
In this case, the womens’ commission says, the resort did not have security cameras and the rooms did not have multiple latches or bolts. The 15-acre property was manned by just seven guards, the commission said.
