The appalling scene left many people in tears at the cremation ground. Agra has been grappling with a surge in Covid-19 cases and a collapsing infrastructure.

The city has been reporting more than 600 cases daily. In the last nine days, 35 people have died due to Covid-19, sources said.

Amid a shortage of ambulances, people are having to wait for nearly six hours to carry bodies of Covid-19 victims to the cremation ground.

Private hospitals in Agra are not admitting patients and nearby districts -- Mainpuri, Firozabad and Mathura -- are sending critical patients to the city.

Mainpuri reported 369 fresh cases in a day followed by Etah (237), Mathura (190), Firozabad (80) and Kasganj (42), according to data. Eight people died in Mainpuri district followed by Etah (seven), Agra (5), Mathura (four), Firozabad (two) in one day.

Social activist Yogesh Malhotra told India Today that the number of cases and deaths were constantly increasing in Agra.

Samajwadi Party (SP) district president Ramgopal Baghel blamed the state government and Centre for the situation.

"We all can see that the BJP has completely failed to handle this pandemic. The party’s failure is coming to light this time. Lack of essential medical facilities for patients like oxygen, beds and drugs can be seen clearly. BJP is misleading people by making false promises," he told India Today.
