Bengaluru, Feb 05, 2018 : A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi charged the Congress government in Karnataka with indulging in corruption, besides accusing it of failing in maintaining law and order, Governor Vajubhai R. Vala in his address to the joint session of the Karnataka Legislature on Monday, heaped praises on the government for “maintaining law and order and for fighting corruption.”
Mr. Vala, in his address to legislators in Hindi, not only praised and complemented the Karnataka government on the two major counts of law and order and corruption, but also praised its commitment to the welfare and development of poor, besides detailing its achievements.
He maintained that the “government continues to fight corruption in public services and a series of e-governance initiatives has increased transparency in efficiency of public service” by pointing out the progress made by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) after its formation.
Lauding the efforts of the Congress-led government in maintaining law and order in the State, which is facing criticism from Opposition BJP, Mr. Vala said, “The government ensured communal harmony and public order. Sporadic incidents of communal violence have been firmly dealt with.”
In a nutshell, praise, claims and plans of the government, whose terms ends by May, were some of the salient features of Mr. Vala’s address. He did not forget to delineate the government’s stand on some of the key issues such as Mahadayi and Cauvery river disputes.
Mr. Vala praised the government for implementing various schemes to provide social security to 56.57 lakh beneficiaries including senior citizens, destitute widows, persons with disabilities and those below the poverty line.
River water disputes
On the ongoing river disputes, he said, “The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice to the State in availing of its just needs for water in the Cauvery and Krishna basins. It will continue to make all efforts to ensure its rightful share of water to people of Karnataka from Mahadayi basin.”
Detailing the progress on the ‘controversial’ and the long awaited Yettinahole drinking water project, the Governor said, “The first phase lift component works of Yettinahole drinking water project are taken up at an estimated cost of ₹3,716 crore under 5 packages. Two major projects for utilising treated sewage water from Bengaluru city for filling of tanks in Kolar and Chikkaballapura districts so as to raise ground water levels are being implemented expeditiously.”
He did not forget to mention the achievements of the government in protection of wildlife. “Karnataka has the largest number of tigers in the country, numbering 406, and also has about 6,072 elephants, constituting 25 per cent of population of elephants in the country.”
