New Delhi, July 12, 2011: Barely an hour after the Cabinet reshuffle was formalised with a swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the heartburn among several ministers was telegraphed with protests and public comments. Veerappa Moily, who has been transferred from the Law Ministry to Corporate Affairs, has blamed "vested interests" for his move.
Srikant Jena and Gurudas Kamat - Congress leaders - skipped the ceremony to protests against their assignments; neither was given Cabinet rank; Mr Kamat has in fact resigned.
Mr Moily’s exit comes after the government found itself losing ground in several high-voltage cases including the telecom scam. However, Mr Moily said, "The cases where we fail... they are because of fault on the part of the administrative ministry... we are only the face in court." Mr Moily attacked the media, accusing it of "sometimes being blind to the situation and reality." He said of his term as Law Minister, "I am very proud what I have done... it is unprecedented."
He said of his new portfolio, "No department is small. Corporate Affairs deals with the business world... it is the ministry of the future."
