Winter session of Karnataka Assembly to begin from tomorrow

Bengaluru, Dec 04, 2023: The winter session of the Karnataka Assembly is set to start on Monday. The Belagavi session is expected to be stormy, with the Opposition aiming to target the Siddaramaiah government on various issues including withdrawal of the CBI case against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

 

The Assembly speaker, UT Khader, said that three bills are scheduled to be tabled and 7 to 8 are likely to be added when the session begins. "The development of Uttara Karnataka will be a crucial topic to be discussed and will be given time in the upper house," the speaker told reporters.

The BJP, headed by Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka, is looking ahead to cornering the government with a host of issues in hand. Drought conditions in the state, the withdrawal of the CBI case against DK Shivakumar, and the caste census report will be the top issues that the BJP will hold forth.

The waiver of farmer loans in lieu of financial losses due to drought will be one of the top demands the BJP will be raising during the winter session, opposition sources told India Today. The BJP is also planning to bring up minister Zameer Khan’s recent statement on BJP leaders "bowing down" in front of Muslim speaker UT Khader.

Apart from these, R Ashoka said, ’We will talk about the law and order situation, transfer scam, and farmer loan waiver. They gave Rs 2000 to farmers just to save their face. That’s not enough. We want a farmer loan waiver,’ the BJP leader said.

This is the first assembly session after the BJP appointed its new state unit chief BY Vijayendra. Vijendra and R Ashok met former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Kumaraswamy ahead of the Assembly session.

According to party sources, the alliance partners have decided to jointly take on the ruling Congress government at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi.

The previous assembly session in Bangalore’s Vidhan Soudha witnessed the suspension of 9 BJP MLAs after they tore and threw papers at the Deputy Speaker while he was in the chair during a heated discussion.
