Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 22, 2022: A Youth Congress leader has been arrested in connection with the attack on the state headquarters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. The accused, identified as Jithin, had hurled explosives at the AKG centre in June.
Jithin, a native of Manvila, was arrested on Thursday by the Kerala Police nearly three months after the incident. The Kerala Police crime branch has said that the accused has confessed to his crime. But while speaking to the media, Jithin claimed that he is innocent.
The Youth Congress leader’s car, shirt, shoes and mobile phone calls turned out to be crucial in the probe.
The accused had escaped using a car after throwing the explosives, the police said, adding that they traced the car and it belonged to the Youth Congress leader.
CPM’s state committee office, the AKG centre, was attacked on the night of June 30, 2022. The police formed a special investigation team and probed the case for two months, but no clue was found in the case. In the beginning, police had only the visuals of the attacker arriving at the AKG centre on a red scooter and throwing the explosives.
Later, the government handed over the investigation to the crime branch, who arrested the accused after a thorough probe with the help of the cyber cell.
Meanwhile, Congress leader VT Balram alleged that Jithin was questioned by the police four times and then released and now he has been taken into custody again to save the face of the Left government.
