’The Kerala Story’ should be banned, says Congress as film teaser sparks row

Mangalore Today News Network

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 09, 2022: The Congress has called for a ban on the film ’The Kerala Story’ after the teaser of the movie sparked a row. The teaser, released earlier this month, claimed that over 32,000 women from Kerala were converted and most of them were taken to Islamic State-held areas in Syria and Afghanistan.

Amid the row, Kerala DGP asked the Thiruvananthapuram commissioner to register a case against the crew of the film for allegedly portraying the state as a safe haven for terrorists.

Reacting to the teaser, Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan said the film spreads misinformation and it should be banned. "I have seen that teaser. It’s a clear case of misinformation. There is nothing like that happening in Kerala. This is to tarnish the image of Kerala in front of other states. This is spreading hatred, so it should be banned. In normal scenarios, we are against banning films, but these types of misinformation will lead to communal issues," he said.

"There is no record with state police. If there is anything with central intelligence, they have to bring the public. These are the records, these are the list of women, these are the addresses of the women who joined IS, they were recruited from Kerala," he added.

The teaser features Adah Sharma, who narrates her account. She dreamt of becoming a nurse but was abducted from her home and is now jailed in Afghanistan as an IS terrorist.
