Mumbai, Sep 18, 2014: The Dalai Lama today said that the Tibet issue should be resolved but not by force amid loud protests by Tibetan protesters outside Hyderabad House in New Delhi where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is meeting visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"Tibet’s problem is also India’s problem. Before 1950, there was not a single soldier on the northern border and it was peaceful. Sooner or later, you have to solve the problem but not by force," the Dalai Lama said.
The spiritual leader of the Tibetans also hailed President Jinping as "more realistic" and "more open-minded" than that of his predecessor Hu Jintao.
"After all, Sino-India relations on the basis on new trust is very important, very essential," he added.
His comments came as the two political leaders held talks in New Delhi as part of President Xi’s three-day visit to India, where the Dalai Lama has lived since 1959.
The presence in India of the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet following a failed uprising against Chinese rule there, is a source of tension between the two giant Asian rivals.
