‘You’re now my ammi’: Man throws out wife raped by his father

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Sep 14, 2023: A man thrashed his 26-year-old wife and abandoned her after his father allegedly raped her in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

While throwing her out of the house, he said, “Now that my father has forcefully had a relationship with you, I will not let you live with me as you have become my father’s wife and my ’ammi’ (mother)."

Woman

In her complaint filed on September 7, the woman, who got married last year, alleged that her father-in-law raped her when her husband was not in the house on August 5.

The woman alleged that her father-in-law raped her when her husband had taken the mother-in-law to a traditional medicine practitioner on August 5. She said she was also threatened and beaten up by her father-in-law.

When she told her husband about this, he refused to live with her and threw her out of the house. The woman is living with her parents now.

The woman is said to be seven months pregnant but she has not mentioned this in the complaint, police said.

Police have registered a case under Section 376 (sexual assault), Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) against the woman’s father-in-law and husband.

According to Station House Officer Ravinder Yadav, the police have initiated legal proceedings against the father-in-law and the husband based on the complaint lodged by the victim and have commenced an official inquiry.

He further mentioned that the woman’s statement had been officially documented before a magistrate in accordance with Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

In response, the father-in-law has refuted the accusations and claimed that she was pressuring them for monetary gains.

A similar incident grabbed headlines in June 2005, when a 28-year-old mother of five accused her father-in-law of sexual assault. Subsequently, a local community panchayat barred her from cohabiting with her husband and instructed her to regard him as her son.
