’Allow farmers to consume wild boar meat’: BJP MLA urges Karnataka government

Bengaluru, Dec 08, 2023: Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and former Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra has asked the state government to allow farmers to consume wild boar meat, in cases where they have shot and killed wild boars for causing crop damage.

Jnanendra’s statement came during the ongoing Karnataka Assembly session.

 

"There is a provision in the Forest Act to shoot and kill a wild boar damaging crops. However, there is no provision allowing consumption of wild boar meat," Jnanendra said.

During the session, Jnanendra also questioned the law that requires the arrest of farmers who eat wild boar meat, asking about the system behind such actions.

"People from my constituency who consumed wild boar meat, have been arrested. We need to amend such a law," he added.

The former Karnataka Home Minister emphasised the difficulty faced by farmers in combating the menace caused by monkeys, bison, and wild boars, which affects their ability to safeguard their crops.

He also urged the government to implement suitable measures to tackle wildlife nuisance.
