According to sources, after the Lok Sabha was adjourned at 12 noon, the BJP MPs were raising slogans and demanding the resignation of Sonia Gandhi over Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s ‘rashtrapatni’ remark.

The Congress leader had earlier referred to President Droupadi Murmu as ’rashtrapatni’.

During the chaos, Sonia Gandhi approached BJP leader Rama Devi and reportedly told her that Chowdhury had apologised over the remark and asked Devi as to why her name was being taken in the house.

Following this, Smriti Irani intervened during their conversation. However, the agitated Congress President then turned around and said ‘don’t talk to me’, sources said.

The heated exchange of words between the two leaders lasted for two to three minutes.

Several ministers, including TMC MP Mahua Moitra, NCP’s Supriya Sule, BJP’s Pralhad Joshi and Arjun Meghwal came forward to resolve the situation.

Congress MPs Geeta Kora and Jyotsna Mahant have claimed that Smriti Irani and even some male BJP MPs had misbehaved with Sonia Gandhi.

On the other hand, female BJP parliamentarians are likely to move a privilege motion against the Congress chief. According to top BJP sources, the party will continue to demand Sonia Gandhi’s apology over the remark.
