The police said before 35-year-old Janhavi Gadkar’s car crashed into the taxi, she had narrowly missed hitting two bikes, and other bikers gave chase to her car. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sangramsinh Nishandar told NDTV that Ms Gadkar has, in a statement to a doctor, admitted that she had consumed alcohol.

Two of five people travelling in the taxi, Mohd Salim Saboowala, 50, and Mohd Hussain Sayaed, 57, who was driving, were killed. The collision reduced the front of the taxi to a mangled heap. Ms Gadkar’s Audi too has suffered extensive damage, the police said.

Ms Gadkar, who is a Vice President (Legal) with Reliance Industries Limited, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for rash driving, the senior policeman said. Other charges, he said, could be added after investigation. The police have been handed videos shot by people of the woman allegedly driving recklessly minutes before the collision.

Ms Gadkar will be produced in court in a short while from now.

Imran Modi, a relative of one of the people killed told NDTV, "Yesterday, we were celebrating the board exam results of a member of the family. Today we are in grief due to someone else’s recklessness."
