According to Times of India, the men were herding eight buffaloes when some people from a suspected cattle-protection group stopped them in Balumath forests of the district. The two men - Mohammad Majloom and Azad Khan - were thrashed and hanged from a tree. Their bodies were found with hands tied behind their backs and mouths stuffed with cloth.

Latehar Superintendent of Police Anoop Birthary said that the attackers are yet to be identified. "Police is gathering information about them. We are trying to verify the motive behind the attack. We don’t know whether it was personal or business enmity which led to the attack," Birthary said.

Meanwhile, situation is tense in Jhabbar village in Latehar, some 100 km from the state capital Ranchi. Some policemen were injured in stone pelting by the locals who demanded the attackers be arrested as soon as possible. Security forces had to resort to lathicharge the angry protesters who tried to prevent them from taking away the bodies for post-mortem.
