21 dead as bus falls in gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor

Akhnoor, May 30, 2024: At least 21 people died and 40 others injured after their bus fell into a deep gorge near Tanda area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Akhnoor city on Thursday.

The bus was carrying passengers from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. They were travelling from Jammu to Shiv Khori shrine in Reasi district.

The bus fell into a gorge near Kali Dhar Mandir on the Jammu-Poonch highway.

The injured were taken to a local hospital in Akhnoor and Government Medical College in Jammu.

In a statement, District Magistrate of Jammu said, "A bus carrying passengers from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh has met with an accident near Tanda, Akhnoor in Jammu. Rescue operations are underway."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the incident and said, "Anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus mishap in Akhnoor. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon."

"Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased due to the bus mishap. The injured would be given Rs 50,000," he added.
